Cardiovascular Sonography, AAS

The Cardiovascular Sonography, AAS program is a medical imaging program offered as a specialization of the heart and blood vessels and the knowledge and skills for performing high-quality diagnostic exams to aid physicians in making a diagnosis.  The Cardiovascular Sonography program is an intensive, six-semester program, not including prerequisite courses, and is designed for students who wish to specialize in this area of medical imaging with preparation for national certification exams. 

The program prepares students to be competent entry-level sonographers in cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains in vascular and cardiac imaging. Students will learn about various vascular and cardiac examinations including but not limited to arterial and venous systems and adult echocardiography.  Graduates are prepared to sit for national certification in cardiovascular imaging.   

The program is an intensive six-semester program, not including prerequisite courses, and is designed for students new to patient care.  The cardiovascular technologist must have in-depth knowledge of physics, pathophysiology, hemodynamics, and sonography techniques to create diagnostic images. Cardiovascular sonographers are trained to provide patient care, and high-quality sonographic images to assist physicians in various medical settings. 

The clinical experience may require relocation and/or commuting to complete.

Competencies


Upon successful completion of this program, students will (be):

  1. Consistently create high quality diagnostic sonographic images of the cardiac system by the proficient use of technical factors.
  2. Demonstrate communication skills.
  3. Provide consistent, high-quality patient care. 
  4. Conduct themselves ethically and professionally. 
  5. Successfully employed in an echocardiographic position. 

First Semester - Prerequisites


Choice Points


  • Students pursuing Cardiovascular Sonography must take ZOO 2015 .
  • Students starting the Cardiovascular Sonography, AAS in Summer 2026 will have the option to complete either NRST 1510  or HLTK 1600  during the first year of the program instead of as a prerequisite course.

  • Students must show completion of, or be in-progress of completing, all required prerequisite courses by the application deadline to apply for Cardiovascular Sonography program.

  • Upon completion of IMAG 2525 , students are eligible to sit for the Sonography Principles of Instrumentation (SPI) board certification.

  • Completion of Cardiovascular Sonography, AAS.
  • Students are eligible during this semester to apply for certification through ARDMS. The majority of employers mandate these certifications.

The admission requirements for the Cardiovascular Sonography program were revised in 2025. All program completion requirements, including prerequisite courses, communicated in the 2025-2026 College Catalog will be enforced for students applying for admission to these programs in Fall 2026 or any semester thereafter. The information below is intended to be a guide, and does not guarantee regional job placement, job availability, or a specific wage after completion of the program.

Potential job opportunities for individuals with degrees in Vascular Technology and Echocardiography (Echo) include positions as a Vascular and Echo sonographers in hospitals, clinics, and commercial sales technicians.
