Heating, Ventilation, & Air Conditioning/Refrigeration (HVAC/R), AAS

The energy efficient Heating, Ventilation, & Air Conditioning/Refrigeration (HVAC/R) program is designed for students who want to gain industry skills and pursue a basic academic foundation in HVAC/R. The Associate of Applied Science degree includes general education requirements; as well as advanced HVAC/R courses installation, repair, and maintenance knowledge and skills: thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and electrical topics. Students will graduate with two credit diplomas (Industrial Systems Technology and HVAC/R) and an Associate of Applied Science degree. The HVAC/R AAS is designed for students working in a registered Department of Labor apprenticeship and those who want to go directly into the workforce. Students must complete the Industrial Systems Technology Credit Diploma and the HVAC/R Credit Diploma prior to enrolling in the HVAC/R AAS.

Competencies

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  1. Analyze the performance of a refrigeration system using pressure and temperature.
  2. Build a mechanical piping system in accordance with technical specifications.
  3. Create a mechanical refrigeration system capable of transferring a specified heat load.
  4. Verify that an air conditioning system is operating at capacity.
  5. Evaluate a residential furnace using the commissioning process.
  6. Design an air conditioning system.
  7. Repair a malfunctioning air conditioning system in accordance with Section 608 of the Clean Air Act.
  8. Design a heating and cooling system for a given structure.

If students choose to transition to another program within the Trades & Technical Studies pathway, they should be particularly aware of the choice points that indicate when a decision to branch off into another program must be made to ensure credits and time are not lost.

  • Completion of three general education courses, including ENGL 1010  as a prerequisite for other courses.

  • Completion of AAS in Heating, Ventilation, & Air Conditioning/ Refrigeration.

Transfer Information

This degree is well suited for those who may be interested in pursuing a Bachelor of Applied Science, Applied Management degree at Laramie County Community College.

LCCC courses may transfer to institutions in addition to those with formal articulation agreements. Students are strongly encouraged to determine the degree requirements and transfer policy of the specific college/university and program to which they plan to transfer.
