Music, AA

The AA Music program is designed for students who wish to explore and prepare for a wide range of career options in music. Within the music program, students will have the opportunity to study and perform music from a variety of styles throughout history and across multiple cultures. Completing this program may qualify students for employment in areas related to music. This degree offers coursework intended to transfer to a four-year university, allowing students to pursue a baccalaureate degree in Music, Music Education (vocal or instrumental), or Music Performance (vocal or instrumental). Students seeking to complete a major in music, or who are interested in music courses, should seek the advice of a music faculty member in addition to their Advising Team.

Competencies

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  1. Apply appropriate terminology in music courses.
  2. Demonstrate basic analytical knowledge in music in its cultural contexts.
  3. Develop basic musicianship skills.
  4. Demonstrate basic analytical knowledge in music in its historical contexts.
  5. Develop high level individual performance skills on a major instrument.
  6. Demonstrate fundamental teaching concepts for majors pursuing the Music Education Field of Study.
  7. Develop high level ensemble performance skills on a major instrument.

If students choose to transition to another program within the Communication & Creative Arts pathway, they should be particularly aware of the choice points that indicate when a decision to branch off into another program must be made to ensure credits and time are not lost.

First Semester


Choice Points


  • Students pursuing the Music Education Field of Study should choose a 3 credit PS course to not exceed 64 credits.
  • ^Elementary Class Piano I-IV (MUSC 1290 MUSC 1295 MUSC 2290 MUSC 2295 ) are not required for music majors pursuing the Music Education Field of Study. (See Program Comments below.)

Second Semester


Choice Points


  • Diction for Singers is only required for students pursuing the Music Education field of study and whose primary instrument is voice. Voice students must take Diction for Singers and one set of Public School Methods (I and II) in a different semester.
  • ^Elementary Class Piano I-IV (MUSC 1290 MUSC 1295 MUSC 2290 MUSC 2295 ) are not required for music majors pursuing the Music Education Field of Study. (See Program Comments below.)

Approved Program Courses

**Ensemble courses: may be repeated up to 8 times for credit.

Applied Music Instruction (MUSC 1051 MUSC 1052 MUSC 2071 MUSC 2072 ) may be repeated up to 8 times for credit.

**Public School Methods must be chosen from the following: MUSC 1310 /MUSC 1315  Brass, MUSC 1320 /MUSC 1325 ​ Percussion, ​MUSC 1330 /MUSC 1335  Strings, MUSC 1350 /MUSC 1355  Woodwind or the combination of MUSC 1360 /MUSC 1340  Guitar.

^Program Comments

For students pursuing the Music Education field of study:

  • All music students must pass MUSC 2395  Piano Proficiency by the end of the fourth semester.
  • Although not required for students seeking the Music Education Field of Study, it is strongly encouraged to take Elementary Class Piano I-IV (MUSC 1290 , MUSC 1295 , MUSC 2290 , MUSC 2295 ) for students needing extra academic support with piano skills. Please see an advisor or the music faculty representative if recommendations are needed.
