The equine studies program provides students with hands-on experience in training and health care to produce graduates who are in high demand in the equine industry. Built on a strong foundation of training and expertise, the nationally recognized program continually adapts to incorporate the latest techniques and scientific advances to best prepare students for success. Equine Science students gain access to transfer into animal science and equine science baccalaureate programs.

Competencies

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

Apply critical thinking with the appropriate academic and technical skills to problems faced by the equine industry.
Use effective and clear communications addressing key topics in equine management to persuade and inform others.
Work collaboratively with the equine industry and community in order to build consensus, to address challenges, and accomplish equine management goals.
Associate abnormal equine behavior with possible health concerns to include possible causes, pathology, prevention, and treatments.
Assess equine health by correlating symptomatic presentations with associated physiological causes.

The AS in Equine Science is intended for students who are wishing to transfer to a university and obtain a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree. Most of the potential jobs listed below require a student to transfer and continue their education at the next level. Potential job opportunities for individuals with degrees in equine science may include equine scientists, equine geneticists, equine nutritionists, assistant general manager, barn/stable manager, extension educator, ranch foreman, or sales representative.

Transfer Information

The Equine Science Associate of Science is well suited for transfer to a Bachelor degree program. Possible options at the Bachelor’s level include degrees in Animal Biology, Business, Communication, Equine Science, Meat Science and Food Technology, Pre-Veterinary Medicine, Production, and Range Livestock.
